Living memory of Switzerland for everyone
The Swiss National Library (NL) collects “Helvetica” – Swiss texts, images and sounds – and with its collections safeguards the collective memory of Switzerland. In collaboration with other institutions, it facilitates extensive access to the cultural heritage of the country. As a central memory institution, the National Library bridges the past via the present to the future.

Lakes, Mirrors of Switzerland (Extended until June 12)
Switzerland’s 1,500 or so lakes shape the country’s landscape and identity. The exhibition ‘Lakes, Mirrors of Switzerland’ takes you on a journey through history, from Switzerland’s founding myths and legends, to the tradition of ‘Badi’ (open-air swimming areas), dams and reservoirs. Swiss waterfalls were painted and drawn by Swiss Little Masters (Kleinmeister), described in travel writing and featured on posters promoting tourism. Digitised works from the National Library offer a glimpse into this visual world.

Bern, 28.05.2026 — Wegen der Gesamtsanierung des historischen Gebäudes an der Hallwylstrasse verlegen die Schweizerische Nationalbibliothek und das Bundesamt für Kultur ihre Tätigkeiten vorübergehend an einen provisorischen Standort an der Monbijoustrasse 72–74 in Bern.
Der Fotokünstler Christian Scholz schenkt der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek eine komplette Edition von «501 – Portraitwerk Schweiz. Ein künstlerisches Programm»
Bern, 19.05.2026 — Die Graphische Sammlung der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek erhält eine bedeutende Schenkung zur Erweiterung ihrer umfassenden Sammlung an fotografischen Portraits. Der Zürcher Fotokünstler Christian Scholz (*1951), zusammen mit seiner Familie, überlässt dem Bund eine komplette Edition des Œuvres «501 – Portraitwerk Schweiz. Ein künstlerisches Programm». Bekannte Schweizer Persönlichkeiten sind darin zu entdecken, aber auch viele Unbekannte, die sich in ihrer Gesamtheit zu einem reich modulierten «Gesicht der Schweiz» zusammenfügen.
